About the presentation: Have you always dreamed of becoming a musician but haven’t dared take the leap? Are you an aspiring musician who would like to hear about what it’s like to be a woman in the music industry – the joys, challenges and resources available? Are you an established musician who would like to share your experience with others? Kim Wempe is a prairie born, Nova Scotia based singer/songwriter with a powerful voice whose songs often deal with themes of hope, strength and personal growth. She is the 2010 East Coast Music Award Winner for Rising Star of the Year. Kim’s webinar will give you insight into songwriting and working in the music industry in Canada. About the presenter: With the release of her new full-length album Painting With Tides (GroundSwell/Warner), Wempe channels her passion into a powerful collection of contemporary Canadian roots music. Born in a small Saskatchewan farming town, Kim lived for a period in Alberta before heading to Canada’s East Coast in 2007. After only three months in Nova Scotia, Kim realized that what once seemed a daunting and unplanned move was actually put in her path for a reason. The change of scenery and people provided the theme of Painting WithTides and nurtured a fresh view on life, home, self, and music. It’s been an unforgettable couple of years for the young singer-songwriter. After battling in the studio for a sound she couldn’t seem to find and struggling for the finances for a full-length album, Kim released the EP Where I Need To Be in May 2009. The EP was awarded Folk Recording of the Year at the Nova Scotia Music Awards in November 2009.

Kim Wempe est combative. C'est ce qui nourrit sa passion débordante et l'énergie féroce qu'elle dégage lorsqu'elle monte sur scène. Avec la sortie de son premier album Painting the Tides http://kimwempe.com/listen/ (GroundSwell/Warner), Wempe canalise cette passion dans une collection de pièces contemporaines de musique roots canadienne. Elle lance son album tout juste après avoir reçu le prix de Rising Star of the Year des East Coast Music Awards 2010.
Avec ses paroles perspicaces et sa voix intrépide, Wempe raconte ses histoires sur le ton cru et lourd dont ses fans raffolent. C'est une voix qui, dans les mots de Dan MacDonald, du Cape Breton Post, « ... laisse s'échapper une puissance émotive exceptionnelle, dans un style qui évoque Janis Joplin ».
Née dans un petit village rural de Saskatchewan, Kim a vécu en Alberta pendant un certain temps avant de déménager dans les Maritimes en 2007. Après seulement trois mois en Nouvelle Écosse, Kim s'est rendu compte que sa décision de déménager, si elle avait été impulsive et imprévue initialement, lui est venue pour une raison. Le changement de décor et de communauté lui a inspiré le thème de Painting With Tides et lui a apporté de nouvelles perspectives sur la vie, l'appartenance, l'identité et la musique.
Cette période est inoubliable pour la jeune chanteuse. Après s'être démenée en studio pour trouver un son qui lui échappait, et après s'être battue pour trouver l'argent nécessaire à la production d'un album, Kim a réussi à lancer le simple Where I Need To Be en mai 2009.
Le simple a remporté le prix de l'Enregistrement folk de l'année lors des Nova Scotia Music Awards en novembre 2009. Sa prestation mémorable aux East Coast Music Awards en février 2010 a fait tourner bien des têtes et décrocher la mâchoire de plusieurs des spectateurs présents, y compris celle du conférencier principal, Bob Harris de la BBC. Après une prestation avec son orchestre, elle chante une version solo de Oh Heart, une ballade déchirante.
Elle a aussi fait escale aux Jeux olympiques de 2010 à Vancouver et au Junofest à Saint-Jean TN, en plus de signer un contrat avec l'étiquette et agence d'artiste GroundSwell, basée à Halifax, avec l'appui et la distribution nationale de Warner Music Canada. La voix et la musique de Kim ont trouvé un écho d'un bout à l'autre du Canada et elle a partagé la scène avec des artistes de renom comme Jill Barber, Jenn Grant, Amelia Curran, Justin Rutledge, Royal Wood, et Coco Love Alcorn.
