It’s Valentine’s Day and we are taking this day into our own hands! The National Day of Action Hundreds of girls and young women across Canada are mobilizing their communities to take action against social inequality as it touches their lives and communities. This year, girls and young women will focus their actions around issues poverty and class discrimination. The spirit of the event is festive, creative and grounded in the serious realities faced by girls and young women.

It is in this spirit that people and organizations from across the country are mobilizing their community around the issues of violence and security of girls and young women. Inspired by this theme, workshops, theatre, performances, photography and literature exhibit, meetings and public protests will take place during that day.

Fire and grace workshops - 2007

We invite you to join us for Fire and Grace; a weekly workshop that uses flamenco movement to deepen our connection to our bodies and their voices. Together we will embark on an exploration that will engage us in movement, reflection and sharing. Girls and women of all ages are welcome!

Seoul Women's Foundation Conference 2004

When Girls Action Foundation was invited to speak at an International conference on young women’s health, safety and empowerment in Seoul, Korea, we had to say “yes!” I had the pleasure of being the one to represent Girls Action at a symposium with more than 100 participants – including girls from schools in Seoul, academics from surrounding universities, policy makers and decision-makers from local governments, and women working in social service agencies dedicated to serving young women.

Transforming Spaces Conference - 2003

Transforming Spaces was a groundbreaking conference on girls and girlhood that was held in Montreal, Canada in November, 2003. It was the first of its kind in Canada. It brought together hundreds of girls and young women, community practitioners, grassroots activists, service providers, academics, educators and policy makers in a space devoted to communication, collaboration and change in the social realm.

World Urban Forum - 2006

Girls World Wide: Art, photos, documentaries & discussions on young women’s urban experiences

For two weeks in the summer of 2006, twenty-five young women representing five Girls Action Foundation network member organizations gathered in Vancouver to discover how urban sustainability is impacted by gender equity. They were joined by 400 youth from Canada and around the world for the World Youth Forum, and then by close to 7000 national and international delegates for UN-Habitat’s World Urban Forum III, “From Ideas to Action.”
